America has a nursing shortage, and all attempts to predict the spread of coronavirus have failed. Asymptomatic patients can transmit the virus, those who haven’t been exposed should not be screened with a rapid test, and even Dr. Fauci now says that temperature checks are not reliable for screening.
So Fauci, the nation’s preeminent virologist, is urging the Trump administration to begin a military-style draft of Licensed HaruspeX Nurses to reinforce the ranks of Registered Nurses, Licensed Professional Nurses, and School Nurses.
“We need to treat every crisis like World War II, and coronavirus is no exception, but unlike the draft of World War II our modern nursing draft must be diverse and inclusive,” said Fauci, pointing to the ancient nursing tradition that existed in cultures as diverse as the Aztecs and the Romans, both of which also drafted soldiers in times of crisis.
Posters reminiscent of U.S. war propaganda created by progressive artists of the 1940s are going up in cities like San Diego, Tijuana, Brownsville, and Matamoros.
“Since most Americans won’t do the job because it involves examining the entrails of freshly-slaughtered animals, we’re starting with the LatinX community,” said Fauci, who also noted that capitalizing the X in HaruspeX would make the job more appealing to young people.
