Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) has ordered the destruction of the U.S. Capitol Building, saying it should never have been built in the first place, and it was immoral for the country to rebuild it after the British burned it down in 1812.
“It is unacceptable that our Capitol was begun in 1793 while slavery was still legal,” says Pelosi’s order. “Democrats can no longer, in good conscience, consent to work in a building that was constructed under a regime of systemic racists.”
“The central dome of the Capitol Building was Thomas Jefferson’s idea, and Jefferson owned slaves,” Pelosi continued. “Even worse, the dome is intentionally reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome, which was built by slaves under an Emperor who ruled over an entire economy based on slave labor.”
Demolition will begin when Black Lives Matter leaders, at Pelosi’s invitation, tear down the “Statue of Freedom”, the armed female figure which has adorned the Capitol dome since 1863, the year President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, gave the Gettysburg Address, and presented his plan for Reconstruction of the South.
Pelosi stopped short of calling for the demolition of the Pantheon, saying she “can’t tell the Italians what to do even though Columbus is ultimately responsible for all racism in America.”
But she did demand that Gov. Northam begin the demolition of the Virginia State Capitol Building because its dome was designed by Jefferson.
“I’m hopeful that Virginia and the other states will coordinate with us in this long-avoided rewriting of history,” Pelosi said. “We don’t yet know how many government buildings must destroyed, but the number is likely in the thousands.”
In 2013, the official cost of the Capitol Building was $133 million in non-inflated dollars. Demolition could cost $2 billion, but Pelosi said the symbolic gesture will mark the beginning of the end of racism in America.
