Voters in New York City are urging “Hammurabi for Mayor” because, unlike the policies of current mayor Bill De Blasio, the famous Code of Hammurabi was advanced far beyond tribal custom and recognized no blood feud, private retribution, or marriage by capture.
“Mayor De Blasio has presided over the swift and violent deterioration of New York City because his policies do not further economic or racial justice, but chaos and destruction,” says campaign literature from a shadowy organization cryptically named “Make New York Babylon Again.”
“We think of Hammurabi as the guy who said ‘take an eye for an eye,’ and maybe that’s what New York City needs,” says MNYBA. “And yes, he did dam up rivers and release them suddenly to create devastating floods that destroyed the cities of his enemies, but he didn’t engage in retribution and class warfare against residents of his own city.”
In a new poll, a majority of residents agreed that “Bill De Blasio is worse than the absolute ruler Hammurabi, who at least brought Mesopotamians together 3,800 years ago under the laws Shamash, the Babylonian god of justice.”
