Gavin Newsom has endorsed a 2020 ballot measure designed to secure election equality for all the state’s voters by totally relieving them of the toxic responsibility of paying attention to politics.
Billionaire philanthropist Tom Steyer, who is funding the proposition that would “End Voter Oppression Today” (EVOTE), explained why mainstream Democrats like Newsom have united behind the effort.
“Republicans have always sought to disenfranchise voters, and their fascist techniques have only become more aggressive in the Trump era,” said Steyer. “Our measure recognizes that when any voter is oppressed, all voters are oppressed.”
Reached by phone at his San Francisco office, Newsom said, “I’m not afraid of the big hairy audacious goal, and ending voter oppression might be the biggest BHAG of all.”
“Oppression takes many forms, and one of those is Donald Trump,” Newsom said, the moral outrage clear in his voice. “The people want election equality, and if we roll out EVOTE nationwide, we can stop another Trump from ever happening again.”
For now, the goal is to ensure total fairness in California. Stanford psychology professor Stan Harumphey said fairness — and mental health — are at the heart of America’s electoral problems.
“The election cycle is continuous, and social media makes it toxic,” said Harumphey. “I’m a professional, and even I don’t want to deal with it. I support EVOTE because it will set me free from the stress of choosing the lesser of two evils.”
Newsom believes eliminating the possibility of a dictatorship is another big plus.
“Imagine never having to worry about a dictator,” said Newsom. “EVOTE will enable smart, forward-thinking Democratic leaders to bear the burden of voting on behalf of all the people. Under my administration, California will lead the nation in ending voter oppression. I’m all in.”
“We have nothing to lose but the chains that shackle us to an outdated electoral system invented by dead slave-owning white men,” Newsom said. “Voting for EVOTE means you’ll never have to vote again.”
