Central Committee to Protect Journalists demands military coup for press freedom

In response to President Donald Trump’s “fake news” awards, the Central Committee to Protect Journalists and the People for the American Way said they would organize a “Military Coup for Press Freedom” march.

“Publishing the Press Oppressors awards made us realize the soft coup wasn’t working,” said CCPJ spokesman Josef Guevara. “Donald Trump has gone out of his way to attack the press and undermine the norms that support freedom of the media. We must act now to protect democracy. That’s why we’re demanding a military coup.”

The coup announcement comes after individuals and organizations failed to gain traction for impeachment and declaring Trump mentally unfit via the 25th Amendment.

People For the American Way founder Norman Lear came up with the idea for the freedom march.

“Americans have been marching for freedom since before 1776,” Lear said. “Marching for a military coup to protect freedom makes perfect ideological sense in our world today.”

The CCPJ Press Oppressors awards identify Trump and other world leaders including Russia’s Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey.

“From an unparalleled fear of their critics and the truth, to a relentless commitment to censorship, these five leaders and the runner-ups in their categories have gone above and beyond to silence critical voices and weaken democracy,” says the CCPJ website.

“If it isn’t obvious, you’re not paying attention,” said Guevara. “We need a military coup to protect the separation of powers guaranteed by the Constitution.”
