Only days before the deadly Halloween terrorist attack in New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared “I am a Muslim” at a rally in Times Square, saying it’s “important to look beyond stereotypes and stand in solidarity with Muslims.”
Today, Imam Milsu Mamai of New York’s Interfaith Islamic Center declared the mayor “apostate” for abandoning his new faith.
“On Sunday he declared himself a Muslim,” said Mamai. “Today he is not a Muslim. The Qu’ran is clear. He is apostate and must be punished.”
The united Muslim community of New York City isn’t sure what to make of the fatwa.
Some say the mayor should be forgiven because the Qu’ran says “there is no compulsion in religion” [2:256].
Others say the fatwa is correct because of an authentically verified Hadith from the Prophet Muhammad who said, “Whoever changes his religion kill him.”
Whatever the truth about Islam, the NYPD has increased security around the mayor.
