Did FOX40 News team smoke crack and have group sex in a news van?

DEL PASO HEIGHTS – The news was coming hard and fast that day. The FOX40 news van had been to a drug-related shooting, an immigration raid, and an urban-renewal ribbon-cutting in the area of Sacramento sometimes called the “Iron Quadrant.”

Boxed in by freeways and railroad tracks, The Heights has fallen from its glory days when James Haggin converted a Mexican land grant into a thoroughbred horse farm and produced California’s first Kentucky Derby winner in 1886.

Today, the area is known for its considerable ethnic diversity, illegal drug trade, and occasional attempts to renew the urban landscape with artists’ collectives and new-age restaurants.

The four-person FOX crew – two men and two women – parked the van at the dead end of Del Mar Way, across the drainage ditch from Hagginwood Park.

Charles Schwab’s son was playing soccer at Hagginwood that day, and Mr. Schwab remembers seeing the van. “I thought they were doing a story on the soccer tournament,” he said. “And then I saw the telescoping antenna rise up out of the van.”

What he says he saw next can’t be repeated in a family newspaper, but multiple sources have confirmed to The Sac Brie that one of the female FOX employees may have been performing a “pole dance.”

“She was definitely on top of the van,” said Jim McCracken, who was riding his bike along the path that parallels the drainage ditch. “She might have been trying to fix something. But she also had one leg wrapped around the antenna … I don’t really know what happened after that.”

Betsy Jones, who lives on Del Mar Way, said she knows Mr. McCracken. “I saw what he saw. That woman had her top off and was riding that van like it was a mechanical bull. Jim just doesn’t want to be accused of sexual harassment, or he’d say the same thing.”

Jones also said there was “hollering” coming from inside the van. “The door opened, and I think everyone was naked,” she said. “But they slammed the door pretty quick when they saw me.”

One thing Jones knows for sure is the smell of burning crack cocaine. “Oh, they were doing crack, alright. My house is downwind.”

FOX40 disputes the eyewitness statements.

“Our reporters have a tough job, and sometimes they need a break,” said a FOX40 representative via email. “No one works harder to bring you the local news that matters. But we don’t pole dance on top of the van. And we don’t use company property for group sex or crack parties.”

Betsy Jones has no doubt. “They were getting high and doing the nasty. On my street. In broad daylight. Not 100 yards from kids playing soccer.”

The operations manager of Hagginwood Park has sent a letter to FOX40 on behalf of the soccer league.
