That’s the slogan of Sacramento’s latest school – the Barack Obama Learning Ocademy (BOLO) – which will officially be Academy 1 in Sacramento School District 44 1/2 when it opens later this year. “Together Everyone Achieves More Safety.”
BOLO’s are springing up across the nation in the wake of President Obama’s historic administration, and we caught up with Academy 1’s principal at Haggin Oaks Golf Course for an interview.
“Newness alone cannot produce transformation,” Principal Abel Monito said. “We ourselves must be willing to be caught up in the restoration that is possible with each new school year and be willing to make necessary changes that put students first.”
Those changes are reflected in the student handbook, which requires families to provide each student with a clear plastic backpack and body camera, along with more traditional supplies like number 2 pencils and metal detectors with headphones.
“Students can never be safe enough,” said Monito. “Part of our pre-K curriculum will teach interrogation techniques and how to read body language. America is becoming a police state, and we want our kids to have all the latest skills so they can find jobs when they finish high school. We are all our brothers’ and sisters’ and others’ keepers.”
New students will need a security clearance before being admitted, and all identities will be officially kept secret. But Monito said that parents can easily request an “unmasking” for their child’s classmates if they pay a small fee to the Barack Obama Presidential Library (earmarked for the “Shared Responsibility Fund”).
If you would like to enroll your child, the school is located at 1 Barack Obama Way. Monito asks that each family create compact with the school and support their child’s learning:
- Do your homework every day and ask for help when needed.
- Read the student behavior requirements every day outside of school time.
- Follow the school and classroom surveillance plans.
- Share your GPS location, your social media activity, and your blood pressure with the school all day every day.
- Help in making Barack Obama Learning Ocademy a wonderful and safe school.
